Steven Gerrard is preparing a bargain basement swoop to sort out Sevco’s dodgy defence.

According to a report in The Sun Connor Goldson is the target after a horror series of performances from Bruno Alves, Russell Martin and Young McCrorie. David Bates has quit Sevco for newly relegated Hamburg.

Goldson started just four matches in the EPL for Brighton with his last two appearances coming in the 4-0 home defeat from Chelsea in January and Sunday’s 4-0 defeat at Liverpool.

The 25-year-old started his career at Shrewsbury before a loan spell at Cheltenham and earning a £750,000 move to Brighton in 2015.

Despite speculation linking Sevco with big name contacts of Gerrard it looks like this summer’s transfer spree will be a Mark Allen production.

In January the former Manchester City youth coach swooped for Jamie Murphy, Jason Cummings, Sean Goss, Russell Martin and Greg Docherty.

Similar quality additions are expected as Allen tries to raise cash by selling off Josh Windass, Wes Foderingham and James Tavernier.
