Alan Stubbs has been named as the new manager of St Mirren.

The former Celtic defender was interviewed on Thursday about the vacancy with his appointment confirmed on Friday lunchtime.

Stubbs was manager of Hibs when they won the 2016 Scottish Cup with a dramatic 3-2 win over Sevco at Hampden.

Soon after he quit the Edinburgh side for Rotherham but was sacked after just 14 matches.

Since then he has been working in the media although last season he was strongly linked with the Dundee United job following the sacking of Ray McKinnon.

St Mirren will be back in the Premiership next season after a three year break but their Championship success resulted in Sunderland taking Jack Ross to the Stadium of Light as manager.

With Player of the Year Lewis Morgan returned to Celtic making a quick appointment was essential as the Paisley side prepare for their return to the top flight.
