There was heartbreak for Tom Rogic at the World Cup as Autralia lost 2-1 to France.

The Socceroos gave a more than decent account of themselves but it was the French that prevailed thanks to a Video Penalty and an own goal.

Rogic was given little chance to shine with Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante performing an effective, and sometimes illegal man marking job on the Celtic favourite.

Australia looked comfortable until just before the hour mark when referee Andres Cunha called for a video review of a tackle on Antoine Griezemann from Josh Risgden.

The challenge could be interpreted in many ways but certainly wasn’t clear cut but the referee came back to point to the penalty spot with Griezemann equalising from the penalty spot.

In the 62nd minute Australia were level from a clear cut penalty with Mile Jedanak netting after Samuel Umtiti had handled in the penalty box.

Rogic was replaced by former Celt Jackson Irvine after 70 minutes but just as the Socceroos were looking good for a point Aziz Behich stretched to make a clearance but only succeeded in looping the ball over Matt Ryan in the Australian goal.
