Decision Day on first Glasgow Derby

|

The SPFL are almost certain to announce this week that the first Glasgow derby of the season will be put back to Sunday September 2 to be screened by Sky Sports.

On Friday the fixtures were announced with the visit of Sevco scheduled for Saturday September 1 but unless the authorities, including Police Scotland, are prepared to wait until August 16 to keep the match on the Saturday it will have to be switched.

With both clubs involved in UEFA qualifiers it won’t be until August 16 that it is known whether either club will play in the final Europa League play-off round which will be played on August 23 and 30- both Thursdays.

Sevco are highly unlikely to reach that stage in the Europa League after falling at the first hurdle last season but Celtic could be involved if they fail at the second or third round in the Champions League qualifiers.

The first batch of televised fixtures are expected to be announced this week with Aberdeen, Sevco and Hibs potentially playing on Sunday’s throughout August if they progress through the Europa League qualifiers.

Only the Aberdeen v Sevco fixture on matchday 1 has so far been picked for live TV coverage with Sunday August 5 picked since Aberdeen will definitely be involved in the second round of the Europa League qualifiers three days earlier.
