Barry Ferguson believes that Steven Gerrard would be the best PLAYER in Scotland by a country mile!

The former Rangers (IL) skipper seems to be a bit behind the curve, telling Daily Record readers about his excitement over Gerrard’s car pulling up at Ibrox today.

Gerrard’s car is still in the garage on Merseyside as he watches the stars of Canada and Japan perform in the Toulon u-21 tournament.

Expressing his excitement Ferguson told the Daily Record: “I’ve heard some fans talk about the possibility of him pulling the boots back on once he’s assessed the rest of the squad.

Even at 37 he’d probably be head and shoulders above every other player in his dressing room. In fact there’s a good chance he’d be the best player in the whole country.

I understand why Rangers fans would love to see him out there wearing that shirt but I hope it doesn’t happen.

When I was only 18 or 19 older pros used to say to me, “Your body will tell you when it’s time to quit”. I’d look at them as if they were half daft. “Your body doesn’t f*****g talk!”

But now I understand exactly what they meant and Gerrard knew it 18 months ago when he called it a day at LA Galaxy. Yes, he could still be the best player in Scotland by a country mile. But I think he’ll put all his efforts into trying to be the best manager.

Thousands were expected to welcome Gerrard to Ibrox today but were let down gently by a message last night from the club’s PR team.

Since his appointment on May 4 Gerrard hasn’t been near Ibrox, passing up the chance to assess players over the final three matches of the season.

No date has been set for checking in with the first team squad scheduled to return for pre-season training on June 15.

Despite being linked with moves for players such as Fernando Torres and Jermaine Defoe none of Gerrard’s transfer targets have been snapped up.

Director of Football Mark Allen has secured the signings of Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor.
