Steven Gerrard believes that he can turn last season’s flops into title winners.

The new man in charge at Ibrox has inherited a squad put together by Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha that has twice failed to get ahead of Aberdeen in the battle for second place.

Transfer fees have been paid for Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic but it looks like there isn’t much more left in Gerrard’s transfer war-chest.

So far Micky O’Halloran, Jason Holt and Joe Dodoo have been removed from the wage bill but not a penny has been received in transfer fees.

Last season’s run of wins through February under Graeme Murty looked as good as it will get for the Ibrox squad but Gerrard is convinced that he can get more out of the current squad.

We’re not going to change everything overnight,” the former Liverpool youth coach told STV. “We have to give them that patience and that chance to come onboard with the new ideas and the new standards. We’ll see who is prepared.”

Gerrard added: “There’ll be new signings coming in, obviously there’s already been some. There’ll be a few ins and a few more out before the window shuts but we also have to attack the players who have been around here for quite a while.

“Obviously they’ve had a lot of criticism of late and people tell me they’re mentally scarred. But if you’re a mentally strong footballer you can move on and you can park the past up and just worry about the future.

“I think what’s important here is that we worry about tomorrow and moving forward.”

Most Ibrox fans would happily never see again 90% of last season’s failures but their new leader doesn’t have any option other than to try and turn them into heroes.
