McAllister’s great delusion

Gary McAllister believes that the current Sevco squad can be coached into Euro stars!

Last season Pedro Caixinha was unable to get past Progres Niederkorn of Luxembourg but the new regime at Ibrox are already planning on having a run in the Europa League.

FK Shkupi of Macedonia will have their own plans of enjoying a run in Europa with Osijek of Croatia looking to go one better than last season when they lost out to Austria Wien in the play-off stage.

It seems that a few days in the Spanish sun has increased delusions about the current Ibrox squad with McAllister believing that positive thinking and coaching can transform the third best squad in Scotland.

I had no idea who Progres Niederkorn were,” the former Leeds manager told the Daily Record. “It was a team I’ve never heard of. That would have been tough to take and that got that regime off to a bad start.

We are a year on. It is a new regime and a chance to put things right. We want to get a good run and get moving in this competition.

We want to get back a big bit of pride and try to stamp Rangers’ status again. It is a building process of getting the name back out there.

We want to start fast and getting results is the best way of doing that. We are here to help them cope with the pressure but it develops from having a plan, a shape and something to fall back on when things don’t go so well. It is also about having something in there when things do go well.

You are trying to build something when you are starting. You are building a dressing room. You are trying to win over the fans.

I have played at clubs of similar size to Rangers with the same expectation levels.

When you do start to get a few results and can see a bit of performance, you start to gain a wee bit of confidence.

It snowballs quite quickly. If you get everybody together, it can help. That’s what we are trying to achieve. Just get winning, try to get something going.

The thing we are trying to impress on the players is the importance of this camp moving forward.

The process is there. You know what results bring. They bring a belief in what we are doing. The players think ‘This is getting results.’

It works both ways. If you can get them to believe in this method it works for everybody.”

The only thing snowballing at Ibrox are the catalogue of problems off the park.

The Takeover Appeal Panel were back at the Court of Session this week to chase up Dave King over the £11m share issue he has to offer to investors.

On July 1 some of the director loans are due to be repaid while the £3m emergency loan from Close Brothers has been used to sign Connor Goldson from Brighton.
