Graeme Shinnie believes that Ryan Christie can make the big breakthrough at Celtic.

In August 2015 Ronny Deila agreed a £500,000 deal to sign the attacking midfielder from Inverness Caley Thistle but the 23-year-old has had three loan spells since.

With 12 months left on his contract pre-season training is going to be vital with Brendan Rodgers constantly raising the bar in what he is looking for in a Celtic player.

Shinnie played alongside Christie at Caley Thistle with the duo also teaming up for Aberdeen and Scotland.

It’s much tougher to get into the Celtic side than it is to pick up a Scotland cap but Shinnie believes that the loan bhoy is ready to grab his last chance.

Do I think Ryan will challenge for a place at Celtic this season, I do,” the midfielder told The Sun.

I’ve played with Ryan a long time and I know he has the ability. It is going to be tough when Celtic have had the last two seasons they have had.

Callum McGregor, Stuart Armstrong and Scott Brown have been right in the middle of that.

It is naturally going to be tough for Ryan but he definitely has the ability to go in and play. We have seen that over the last couple of years.

Ryan has plenty of self-belief and that is probably one of his big strengths. He is confident in his own ability and he likes to get on the ball.

I am guessing he will go back and try to work as hard as he can in pre-season to see if he can progress into the team.”

With Stuart Armstrong also out of contract in a year’s time Rodgers has some big decisions to make early in the new season.

Midfield is the strongest area of the Celtic squad but that hasn’t stopped the club with being linked with a move for Hibs midfielder John McGinn.
