Graeme Souness fears that there is no transfer war-chest for Steven Gerrard.

The appointment of the former Liverpool u-18 coach was accompanied by moonbeams about Fernando Torres and Jermaine Defoe joining the revolution.

Within a month the cold reality of being unable to prise Connor Goldson away from Brighton has been replaced by loan swoops for Ovie Ejaria and Alex Denny.

When Souness took charge of the old club in 1986 he was able to sign up Terry Butcher and Chris Woods as he steered the club on the route to ruin masterminded by Dave Murray.

Gerrard won’t have a friendly bank to drain or be able to make use of any tax scams as he tries to put together a squad capable of scrapping it out with Hibs and Aberdeen in the battle for second place.

Comparing the job he took on with the old club with the reality of managing a tribute act Souness admitted to The Sun: “It is a very different job for Steven. The money isn’t there. Scottish football can’t attract the same type of players.

And you have to say that when I went there, you had a strong Dundee United, a strong Aberdeen, a strong Hearts and a strong Celtic. Now the focus is just on catching Celtic.”

Asked how new players can be brought in the Sky Sports pundit added: “Steven will be able to attract better players.

I know how big ***Rangers Football Club is. It was a privilege to work there and hopefully a lot of players out there see it that way.

It comes back to whether it will be loan players or if he can buy. I don’t suppose he’ll be buying too many, so Steven will be calling in favours.”
