Graeme Souness is tipping Steven Gerrard to be preparing for Champions League qualifiers in a year’s time.

The Sky Sports pundit introduced Dave Murray to Rangers (IL) and likes to bask in the good old days when the Bank of Scotland provided a limitless overdraft to the Edinburgh based businessman.

Thirty years on the world is a much different place with Celtic dominating the Scottish game and the Ibrox tribute act unable to get close to a high street bank.

Metro Bank provide basic facilities with Dave King forced to turn to Close Brothers in February to keep the lights on until the gullible lined up to renew their season tickets.

Like most English based pundits Souness is under the delusion that two new signings and ‘a rub of the green’ will see the O** F*** balance swing towards Ibrox.

After two seasons in the top flight Sevco have still to match Aberdeen while they trail miles behind Celtic in every area with a turnover of one third of the seven-in-a-row champions.

“He will need a bit of luck and the support of the board,” Souness told Sky Sports News about Gerrard’s prospects.

“The board will have to find some money to enable him to buy some players. Obviously through his contacts in England he will be able to get some loan players.

“So I’m hopeful as a Rangers supporter we can catch Celtic next year.

“I know it’s going to be difficult and they are a good bit ahead in terms of they have had Champions League money for a few years now and we haven’t.

“So it’s a big ask but no impossible and I’m just hoping he has a large slice of luck to go with it all.”

Souness can have odds of 12/1 on an Ibrox title win with Celtic priced at just 1/10.
