Sunderland have made an official approach to take Lewis Morgan on a season long loan.

According to a report in The Sun Brendan Rodgers will decide by mid July whether the winger should stay at Celtic or be re-united with Jack Ross at the League One outfit.

Celtic paid St Mirren £300,000 for the 21-year-old in January and immediately agreed to a loan deal with the Paisley side who went on to win the Championship.

Morgan was voted Championship Player of the Year and picked up two Scotland caps in the recent friendlies against Peru and Mexico.

New Sunderland boss Ross has a close relationship with Rodgers and will be given first shout if the hoops boss decides to send the winger out on loan.

Although Celtic appear to have a number of wing options there are question marks over a number of players in Rodgers’ squad.

James Forrest is entering the final year of his contract, Scott Sinclair has been linked with a move back to England while Jonny Hayes hasn’t played any type of match this year after breaking his leg against Dundee in December.
