Why Leicester can forget about Rodgers

On a quiet news day a number of publishers have decided to dust down an old favourite that isn’t going to be disproved within 24 hours.

‘Leicester move for Rodgers’ will please a certain audience and underline the bizarre notion that avoiding relegation and keeping a club on the gravy train is the height of any manager’s ambition.

The story does have a few obvious stumbling blocks, the most obvious one is that Claude Puel is still in the Leicester job.

The Frenchman’s isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, he doesn’t project himself well to Sky Sports but he has mastered the precious art of keeping clubs comfortably in the middle of the EPL.

Rodgers’ current happiness isn’t a sign of complacency. He is at the club he has a feeling for, he has decision makers on the same wavelength and is very well rewarded.

The Irishman picks up a very generous salary from a club that appreciate and reward him appropriately.

Reaching the Champions League and winning the treble gives Rodgers a salary that compares favourably with most managers in the EPL. He won’t leave Celtic because of poverty.

He’s also had two years in the job and is currently preparing for his third season at Celtic.

Not many EPL managers enjoy that level of security and support.

One of Rodgers’ first Celtic matches was a friendly against Leicester City, managed by Claudio Ranieri. Since then Craig Shakespeare and now Puel have been in charge of Leicester, their board and now bored of the Frenchman and looking for a fresher name.

As recently as November Rodgers spoke out about the six-week-cycle that almost all EPL managers operate under. Few of them have much influence over transfer dealings, Rodgers has a very hands on deal at Celtic.

The six week cycle could apply to the length of time between Rodgers getting linked with fresh English vacancies.

With three years left on his Celtic deal Rodgers will be around for a few seasons yet, quite happily.

One day he will leave the club but it won’t be for a mid-table at best outfit like Leicester.

Moving abroad, especially to Spain carries a strong attraction. When he does depart he’ll have written a few more records at Celtic- and be taking up something more exciting than making up the numbers in the circus down the M74.
