The parish of St Alphonsus has issued a statement about Saturday’s attack on Canon White as a petition to stop Orange Marches topped 60,000 signatures.

Initially Police Scotland attempted to downplay it as a ‘minor incident’ but a backlash from social media saw the assault reclassified as a hate crime.

Across many areas of Scottish society people were appalled that the authorities pander to the Orange Order and that their followers are able to carry out daylight attacks.

More worryingly for Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland is their decision to permit three more marches to pass by east end Catholic churches over the next couple of weeks, or the marching season as some would call it.

The lack of action over the incident, which was only highlighted due to social media, has brought more attention to the issue and the real prospect of counter demonstrations.

Should the authorities proceed with the hate parade on July 21 they are unlikely to find St Alphonsus unguarded with hundreds expected to ensure that there is no repeat of the attack on Canon White.
