Over 16,000 people signed a petition ‘Calling Time on the Orange walk in Glasgow’ by 5pm this afternoon.

Generations of people from the west of Scotland have tended to put their head down or look the other way during July as councils across the country invite hate marchers to the streets.

The events of Saturday involving Canon White at St Alphonsus’ looks like it could be a tipping point as the followers of the Orange Orange badly overstepped the mark.

While the claim from the OO that the attack wasn’t carried out by their members was as predictable as Chelsea fans being blamed for trouble at Rangers (IL) matches the reaction of Police Scotland also struck a nerve.

Initially reporting a ‘minor assault’ it took almost 24 hours before the incident escalated to a hate crime.

Now, is the time to have a real debate on how we can stop this outdated and repressive display.

Glasgow City Council must act to stop these marches. They have a long history of spreading anxiety and fear amongst everyday Glaswegians.

There is no room in our society for this type of bigotry and division.

Sign the petition and call time on the Orange Order marching on our streets!

With Scotland’s Shame out of the gutter, attacking priests alongside their usual anti-social behaviour it looks like the tide is turning.

Trying to present their marches as culture and fun events has failed miserably due to the classlessness of those involved.

Social media campaigns can sometimes be viewed as being ‘right-on’ but with criticism from a wide spectrum it is up to elected officials to take heed and treat hatred.
