Celtic have been linked with a highly unlikely move for Giorgian De Arrascaeta.

According to a report in The Sun Celtic and Newcastle are leading the race for the playmaker who appeared in two of Uruguay’s World Cup matches.

De Arrascaeta was in talks about a move to Monaco last summer but a move broke down over personal terms which would make a move to Celtic seem unlikely. He is currently playing for Brazilian side Cruzeiro.

The Sun report suggests that Newcastle would have to break their £16m transfer record which would be another reason to discount a move to Celtic.

On the back of the World Cup it’s likely that many players will be linked to Celtic mainly due to Brendan Rodgers and the likelihood that they will qualify for the group phase of the Champions League.

Signing players on the back of impressive World Cup performances is generally best avoided with Celtic’s transfer plans well developed ahead of tournaments such as the World Cup.

Celtic are well covered for attacking options with Brendan Rodgers more likely to be strengthening his defence with the extended absences of Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig highlighting the lack of options at the back.
