Why did Celtic get wee Billy Dodds so hot and bothered?

It started quite innocently, Richard Gordon speculated on what sort of performance Aberdeen would require to get past Burnley in the return leg of their Europa League tie.

For Billy Dodds however the mention of the C word proved impossible to resist, like a salmon he jumped out the water to attack the bait. He couldn’t resist.

What had upset so much the man that had previously denied on air that he had been paid through a so-called EBT, correctly described as disguised remuneration by the Supreme Court and HMRC?

Gordon had suggested that Aberdeen would need to repeat the display that they put on to win at Celtic Park in the final match of the SPFL season, it seemed a reasonable enough comment.

You would have to say it’s a Premier League team who finished seventh,” Dodds responded, clearly suggesting that Celtic are inferior to Burnley.

Would Celtic finish seventh in the Premier League? I’m not so sure. You would have to say right now…”

He added: “Put the two teams together half way through a season …I’m not saying Celtic wouldn’t win but it’d be a hard ask for Celtic to go and beat Burnley half way through a Premier League season.

Celtic have not got the class or quality…they’ve got class and they’ve got quality and they’d do well.

But to ask them to beat a team that finished seventh in the English Premier League is a big ask.”

Early last season Dodds was sacked alongside Jim McIntyre by Ross County, since then he hasn’t been involved in management.

With little prospect of getting back into management he can look forward to a cosy career with the state broadcaster, sharing his opinion with others such as Alex Rae, Steven Thompson and Derek Ferguson.
