Dave King has told Steven Gerrard that he has the quality to compete with Celtic.

So far the South African based criminal has allowed his latest manager to pay transfer fees for three players with seven others arriving on loan or on free transfers.

It’s not quite the Revolution that was expected when Gerrard was appointed as manager but as he made a golfing visit to St Andrews King was happy to talk up Sevco’s prospects for the new season.

Transfer business has been slow with the emphasis now on loan signings with the £2.5m fee for Connor Goldson the last money to leave Ibrox.

Speaking to his friends at STV King said: “I think we could probably see another couple coming in and possibly another couple going out just depending on what happens with the English window coming up.

But we’ve certainly added a lot of players and got some away as well but I think the squad is looking to more settled and balanced.

There’s greater quality and depth throughout the squad than we’ve had the last couple of years.”

The man dubbed a glib and shameless liar by a South African judge added: “Obviously, winning would be ideal and is what the club is really about but, season-by-season, I would like to think that we would be more competitive in the league and certainly run it a lot closer toward the end than we did last season.

The fact Celtic have still got an established squad and they still have access to the Champions League money, it gives them a clear player and financial advantage.

But having said that, I think with some of the changes we’ve made we could be competitive this season.”

King isn’t expected to be on Sevco’s flight to Croatia tomorrow for the Europa League match against Osijek.
