Calvin Miller’s loan deal to Dundee could provide Celtic with a solution to their central defensive problem. Steven Caulker.

The central defender has been out of favour with Neil McCann, sitting on the bench for the home defeats against Aberdeen and Ayr United after starting in the opening day defeat at St Mirren.

Caulker joined Dundee in February in a surprise move after being released from his QPR contract with his time at Loftus Road marred by personal problems.

Brendan Rodgers spoke positively about the player a year ago and has kept in contact through his darkest times after taking him on loan to Liverpool.

Celtic’s need for a new central defender has reached chronic proportions with opponents able to convert close to 50% of chances created.

With Dedryck Boyata likely to be on the move and Jozo Simunovic unable to progress in three years at the club Rodgers has been left with Jack Hendry and Kris Ajer for crucial European matches.

At 26-year-of-age Caulker should be in his prime, despite some difficult times there is clearly a player in there that Rodgers knows well.

Moving to Celtic and working with his old Anfield boss is bound to appeal, with the two clubs in talks over Miller going to Dens Park it’s certain that Caulker, under contract till the end of the season, will have been discussed between the two managers.
