It’s a big IF but IF Celtic get past AEK Athens revenge is in mind with a possible meeting against Malmo in the play-off round.

The Swedish champions face FC Vidi (formerly Videoton) of Hungary in the third round with the winners at home to Celtic or AEK Athens in the play-off round.

Three years ago the two clubs met at the same stage with the victory for the Swede’s as good as ending Ronny Deila’s reign as Celtic manager.

Celtic played breathtaking football to go into an early 2-0 lead at home but former Celt Jo Inge Berget scored in the closing stages to give the Swedes a 3-2 defeat to overcome.

Predictably Celtic went down 2-0 in Malmo and although there was some bad luck involved it was the second Champions League KO for Deila.

In the Europa League Celtic failed to win any of their group matches with Deila replaced by Brendan Rodgers at the end of the season.

The Irishman has steered Celtic to the group stage in each of the last two seasons with AEK Athens, Malmo or Vidi standing in his way of a third successive qualification process.

UPDATE: The losers of the Celtic v AEK Athens match will play the loser of the Malmo v Vidi tie in the Europa League play-off.
