Chris Sutton shared the fears of most Celtic fans after the 1-1 draw with AEK Athens in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

The scoreline hands the advantage to the Greek side but it was the manner in which the goal was lost that caused most concern.

Mikael Lustig allowed the ball to be cut back from the by-line with an AEK player virtually unmarked to bury his shot past Craig Gordon.

After 43 minutes the scores were level despite Celtic’s impressive opening highlighted by a great goal from Callum McGregor.

Every goal is preventable, some more so than others.

In any poll of Celtic supporters asked the positions most in need of strengthening they’d have pointed to right-back and central defence.

If proof was needed it came tonight. It could be very costly, certainly more expensive than the cost of a right-back and centre half.

Had those positions been filled last month Brendan Rodgers would have accepted the trade off by selling Dedryck Boyata.

In six days time Celtic could be out of the Champions League, Sutton won’t be the only person disappointed but not surprised.
