Celtic’s defender transfer blow

Aberdeen have rejected an incredible bid of £3.5m from Celtic for Scott McKenna.

Since the turn of the year Hull City and Swansea have made offers for the defender who signed a five year contract in March on the back of a meteoric rise at Pittodrie.

Celtic’s need for a central defender is obvious with both Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic expected to be sold before the end of the transfer window. Sevilla are strong favourites to sign the Belgian next week.

Aberdeen’s current record transfer fee is the £1.75m that Coventry City paid for Eoin Jess in 1996 but despite doubling that the Dons have turned down Celtic’s offer.

Celtic must now decide whether it is worthwhile going back in for a player who is currently injured and cup-tied for the Europa League or move on to an alternative target.

During the 2016/17 season McKenna made 12 appearances for Ayr United in the Championship but he took his chance last season back at Pittodrie and ended the season with four Scotland caps.

On Sunday VIDEOCELTS revealed details of Celtic’s interest in McKenna although the price tag was badly underestimated!
