Chris Sutton has delivered an incredible attack on ‘mismanagement of an industrial scale’ that has cost Celtic a place in the play-off stage for the Champions League.

The former hoops striker was in Athens on Tuesday night as all of the problems came into focus in a 2-1 defeat from AEK.

Since the final whistle blew on Celtic’s Champions League prospects every aspect of the club has been dissected with no one emerging with any credit.

Sutton has praised Celtic to the hilt over the last two seasons but raised his concerns a few weeks back when Brendan Rodgers seemed out of the loop with the transfer of Daniel Arzani.

The hoops boss has other signing priorities with his last two central defenders forced into action against the Greeks with predictable results.

LAWWELL AND RODGERS

The breakdown in the relationship between Peter Lawwell and Brendan Rodgers looks irreversible to me. The boss has made it clear in no uncertain terms who is at fault for the Champions League exit.

Rodgers has launched Lawwell under the bus. He hammered Lawwell before the AEK first leg and has kept battering away with every public statement since. You can’t tell me the Hoops chief won’t be seething with the blame laid squarely at his door. The trust between the two has gone and I can’t see how it can be repaired.

They might publicly kiss and make up and they’ll probably sit round a table and exchange pleasantries but, the moment one goes out the door, the other will be drawing daggers behind his back.

Despite fairly well publicised issues at the club there has yet to be any sign of Dermot Desmond getting involved.
