For the first time since replacing Ronny Deila as Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has voiced some frustrations about transfer activity.

The Irishman is in his fifth transfer window, upto now he has explained, understood and backed the club policy when it comes to buying and selling players.

Every window has brought speculation about Moussa Dembele leaving with Rodgers comfortable explaining the situation even though the striker’s value appeared to drop from around £30m to closer to £20m between July 2017 and January 2018.

Rodgers never pushed to get Stuart Armstrong a special deal a year ago and saw the business sense in selling the midfielder for £7m to Southampton.

The deal to make Odsonne Edouard a permanent signing seemed to be a signal of intent at the start of this transfer window but on the eve of a crucial Champions League qualifier the Celtic boss has gone public about the lack of transfer activity.

“We don’t want to wait,” STV report Rodgers saying. “We need to keep improving and that means signing quality.

“It was important we kept ahold of players like Tom Rogic, but running alongside that is strengthening with quality.

“That is something we need to do and I hope we can do. You need to strengthen when in a good moment.

“Over the last couple of years we’ve lost players and the bare minimum you need is to replace that.

“We’ve lost Stuart Armstrong and haven’t got a replacement yet, Patrick Roberts has gone out and we haven’t got a replacement yet. These are areas we need to complete deals on and get that support into the team.”

The English transfer window closes on Thursday tea-time, Celtic have until the end of August to buy players.
