Steven Gerrard doesn’t know if the Ibrox money men can come up with the £600,000 needed to sign Kyle Lafferty.

The Hearts striker has been desperate to make the move but so far Sevco have only offered £200,000 with another cut price option including Lee Wallace in a return to Tynecastle.

Fernando Torres and Jermain Defoe were at the top of Gerrard’s wanted list but with the transfer window closing in 11 days reality has kicked in at Ibrox.

With Josh Windass flogged to ambitious Wigan for £2m Sevco are left with Alfredo Morelos and Umar Sa Diq as their only strikers.

Speaking after the 3-1 Betfred Cup win over Kilmarnock Gerrard told The Sun: “I’m not sure whether we’ll have anyone new in before Thursday but I’m very optimistic about having someone before the window.

He (Lafferty) isn’t my player. He’s a great player, I like him a lot, but I won’t talk about anyone else’s players.”

After beating Wigan on July 29 Gerrard stated that he wanted to sign a left sided central defender and a striker before the opening SPFL match away to Aberdeen.

Left-back Borna Barisic was signed from Osijek taking to four the number of transfer fees paid out for the Revolution.

Jamie Murphy has joined Graham Dorrans on the long term injured list but Jordan Rossiter is expected to resume full training in the next fortnight.
