For some Celtic fans in the early eighties Charlie Nicholas could do no wrong.

Whether it was Champagne Charlie or the Cannonball Kid the gallus bhoy from Maryhill with bags of talent scoring tonnes of goals was their very own superstar.

Such was his grip on the support that when he left in 1983 for Arsenal talk of a return was almost always welcomed with 50,000 turning out for a pre-season friendly against Everton in 1990 to see the former Aberdeen and Arsenal forward.

Any Celtic fan under the age of 30 will wonder just what relevance the Sky Sports pundit has to their club.

He shows the same interest and enthusiasm for the hoops as the BBC Scotland experts such as Alex Rae, Billy Dodds, Steven Thompson and Kris Boyd.

When Celtic are flying high you’ll barely know that Nicholas exists, comments are restricted to Arsenal and what is going on at his old club.

The minute that the hoops hit a slump, or even take a ‘lap of honour’ Nicholas will be out of his box criticising in scattergun fashion.

The Celtic directors have gone lazy, Brendan Rodgers has grown bored with the board and Hoopy the Huddlehound is on his way to the bright lights of Huddersfield or Burnley.

There are few things more predictable than Nicholas being unhappy with Celtic, or is he just so desperate that he’ll do and say whatever his paymasters tell him?
