He might have managed a 2-0 win over Albania but that didn’t spare Alex McLeish the flack of Scotland fans.
Just 17,500 fans turned up at Hampden to watch the match, barely adding to the 20,000 that had watched the 4-0 hammering from Belgium three nights earlier.

A lack of success, dearth of decent players coupled with an uninspiring manager and contempt for the SFA ensured that the crowd was down and the win greeted grudgingly.
McLeish is believed to be facing a tax bill for around £2m after HMRC won their case against the tax scam that was in use while he managed Rangers (IL).
Any win after 20 years in the international wilderness will be respected but there was little on show at Hampden to suggest that McLeish is about to turn things around.
Away matches to Israel and Albania in October and November will decide Scotland’s fate with the winners of the ,mini group going forward to a play off for a place in the 2020 European Championships.
