91 goal midfielder highlights Celtic’s scoring problem

Kris Commons is unsure whether Celtic has the firepower to get back in among the goals.

Friday’s stalemate at St Mirren highlighted the problem Celtic have around goal with chances at a premium and goals even rarer.

Four goals in five SPFL matches is a worrying statistic which can be broken down into two goals in four matches with no goals scored away from home.

After finishing last season with three top strikers it’s concerning that Olivier Ntcham is the top SPFL scorer this term.

On Thursday night the Celtic strikers will be under the microscope with Commons, writing in the Daily Mail, pointing out the issues facing Brendan Rodgers.

There are still question marks over Edouard. Is he capable of scoring 30 goals per season just yet?

It seems as if Rodgers sees him as his main man. In my eyes, he’s yet to prove he’s worthy of that.

He’s still a prospect. He needs 12 months under his belt before he can be relied on every week.

If Griffiths is fit and plays, he will get you those 30 goals per season.

The question mark over him for some time, though, is the lack of game time he gets and the little injuries he always seems to pick up.

When he plays week-in week-out, he gets fitter and more comfortable in front of goal.

Watching him against Albania when he came on as a substitute, he just looked a bit indecisive and was waiting on things to happen.

When you are in full flow, you don’t even have to make decisions. It just happens.

I saw it training with him each day in his 40-goal season. Back then, he was always the first name on the team-sheet. He improved so much. Leading into that 2-2 draw with England a year ago, he was untouchable.

But he needs games to get like that. He’s like Scott Brown in that sense. If you took him out for four or five weeks, it would be exactly the same.

Edouard started away to St Mirren and was joined by Leigh Griffiths coming off the bench for the last 30 minutes.

Both strikers have been troubled by injuries this season with no other striking options available following the transfer of Moussa Dembele to Lyon.
