Steven Caulker has left Dundee by mutual consent.

The former Liverpool and QPR defender only moved to Dens Park in February but has exercised an option in his contract to get out.

A year ago, while he was undergoing a number of personal problems Brendan Rodgers provided a glowing reference for the 26-year-old that he had taken on loan to Liverpool.

Late last night Dundee announced:

Dundee Football Club can confirm that Steven Caulker has this evening parted company with the club.

Steven has triggered a release clause in his contract to leave before the end of the transfer window in search of a new challenge.

We would like to thank Steven for his efforts whilst at club and wish him all the best for the future.

The loan signing of Filip Benkovic has solved a problem for Celtic but Rodgers may be tempted to bring Caulker in for a trial period.

Rodgers currently has Kris Ajer and Dedryck Boyata available with Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic.

As a free agent Caulker can sign for any club with Celtic the only Scottish side that could match his salary expectations.

During his spell at Dundee he made 14 first team appearances with the last one coming against St Johnstone in the recent 1-0 defeat.

In April Neil McCann claimed that he had turned down a £2m bid from Rosenborg for Caulker which now looks even more foolish.
