A year ago he was the centre of attention after a famous squaring up to Neymar.

Twelve months down the line and it seems that Anthony Ralston’s career at Celtic has stalled at best or is finished.

Facing upto the stars of PSG the young right-back did as well as any of Brendan Rodgers’ side, giving supporters some consolation from the heaviest home defeat in European competition.

Ralston played in the next match, a routine win over Ross County then came on mid-way through the second half of the Betfred Cup win away to Dundee. Since then he hasn’t been involved in a competitive Celtic match.

Following the arrival of Filip Benkovic to the centre of defence, right-back has become Celtic’s problem position.

Last night Mikel Lustig turned in a typically unconvincing performance, it appears that the years, injuries and operations plus international commitments have taken their toll with a new contract beyond next summer not under consideration.

Cristian Gamboa, despite some bright performances earlier in the season is in the same situation but there is still no place for Ralston.

In December the 19-year-old signed a new contract keeping him at Celtic until 2022 but so far his only involvement this season has been in the Reserve League.

A loan move to Dundee United in March provided game time and experience but so far hasn’t paid off in terms of his progress at Celtic.

More Reserve League football between now and January isn’t likely to accelerate his development while Celtic fans look far and wide for a solution to the problem at right-back.
