Paddy McCourt’s playing career has been extended by two matches.

A 2-0 win last night against Drogheda saw them through on a 3-1 aggregate to face Limerick for a place in next season’s top flight.

Whether they go up or not McCourt will be hanging up his playing boots as he takes up a full time post within the Derry City Academy.

Defeat last night would have brought to an end a career where he has displayed his magic across Scotland, England and Ireland turning out for clubs ranging from Rochdale to Celtic alongside stints at Luton, Brighton, Derry City and Shamrock Rovers.

Wherever he has played McCourt has left memories with fans left wondering why he never made it through to the very highest level.

Somewhere in Derry there may be a kid with McCourt’s ability ready to make it through to the big time with the help of one of Ireland’s most skilful players.
