Stan Petrov is the the third Celt to be linked with the manager’s job at Aston Villa.

Brendan Rodgers was quickly touted for the job vacated by Steve Bruce in midweek with Neil Lennon- on the strength of John McGinn’s performances- also mentioned in connection with the job.

According to a report in The Sun Petrov has applied for the job at the club he played with from August 2006 through to his enforced retirement from the game.

The 39-year-old had a brief role with Villa reserves after retiring but found the job too demanding as he continued his recovery from leukaemia.

Petrov has been playing Sunday league football but is now keen to get started in management and is certain to be a popular choice among Villa fans.

The Villa job has been one of the toughest in the business in recent times with Paul Lambert. Alex ‘EBT’ McLeish and Martin O’Neill all having stints in the hot seat but with new owners taking charge in the summer it is one of the top jobs in the Championship.
