Former Celt is the bookies favourite to become the new Ipswich manager

Paul Lambert is the early favourite to become the next manager of Ipswich Town.

Yesterday Paul Hurst, who replaced Mick McCarthy in the summer, was sacked with Ipswich sitting at the bottom of The Championship with nine points from 14 matches.

Thursday’s 2-0 home defeat from Leeds proved to be one too many for the Ipswich board.

Lambert has been out of management since the end of last season when he lost his job at Stoke but still has a strong reputation, especially in Anglia where he has previously managed at Colchester and Norwich City.

The former Celtic skipper earned his reputation as a manager at Norwich where he took them from League One back to the Premiership and stayed up in successive seasons.

Spells at Aston Villa, Blackburn, Wolves and Stoke have been more problematic with the 49-year-old resigning from Blackburn and Wolves over disagreements with directors.
