Alex McLeish has recalled Jack Hendry into the Scotland squad.

The defender made his international debut last season and was involved in the pointless end of season trip to Peru and Mexico.

Injury forced him to miss out on the September international double header against Belgium and Albania but after recovering from injury he has been named in the 25 strong squad to play against Israel and Portugal.

Hendry hasn’t had to look far for critics of his Celtic performances and was blamed by many fans for the goals lost in the recent defeat at Kilmarnock.

Clean sheets against St Johnstone and Aberdeen playing alongside Dedryck Boyata has helped steady Celtic’s season with McLeish pleased to see the 23-year-old back in favour.

“He is still a young guy, he has come into a huge club at Celtic and it has been a roller-coaster at times,” the Scotland boss told the BBC.

“You have to take one or two knocks to become a top footballer. He has played very well for us and hopefully he is over the wee spell where he has taken some criticism.

“It’s a part of the game where you have to be strong enough mentally and he has stood up to the test.”

Hendry is joined in the squad by club team-mates Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney, Callum McGregor, James Forrest and Leigh Griffiths.

A 2-0 win over Albania ended a run of three matches without a win or even a goal for McLeish who received almost £2m in disguised remuneration while he was manager of Rangers (IL).
