Scott Brown is close to agreeing a new Celtic contract as he plans his move into coaching.

The 33-year-old has been signing year by year contracts under Brendan Rodgers and remains a huge influence on the Celtic side.

Under Ronny Deila Brown spent some time coaching the Celtic Development squad before Gordon Strachan and others convinced him to concentrate all of his energies on playing.

John McGinn had been viewed as a potential successor for the Broony role but with a new playing contract in the pipeline that decision will be put back another season or two.

Explaining his future plans the Celtic skipper told The Sun: “Myself, the gaffer and Peter Lawwell have been chatting and it seems to have gone well. I am just concentrating on playing right now.

I’ll go and do my coaching badges in the summer, but I’ll see how long my legs last before I think about moving upstairs.

It’s a great honour to have been playing at Celtic for so long and for them to be helping me out with a coaching role, whether it’s Under-16s or whatever.

It’s an exceptional place to get a start. I’ve learned a lot under the manager here and the previous managers.

I’m still playing so I’ve not thought about managing Celtic one day! You never know. The gaffer has set a great standard here and I still have a lot to learn.

I’m learning every day, from his sessions, the way he deals with situations, the media, public, everything. It’s all first class.

That’s why he has the reputation of being a top manager.”

Brown had been earmarked for a move to Rangers (IL) from Hibs in the summer of 2007 but opted for a £4.4m transfer to join Gordon Strachan at Celtic.

Tony Mowbray made him captain in February 2010- a move ratified by Neil Lennon, Deila and Brendan Rodgers.

With over 100 European appearances and back-to-back trebles on his record the Fifer will go down as one of the most successful ever Scottish footballers.
