Davie Provan has warned Alex McLeish that he needs Leigh Griffiths much more than the other way around.

After dropping the Celtic striker for the Nations League match against Albania relations between the two men have become icy.

McLeish named Steven Naismith as his first choice striker then went public about Griffiths not answering a call from the former Rangers (IL) boss.

After Celtic’s 6-0 win over St Johnstone Griffiths informed McLeish that he would be focussing on his fitness rather than report for international duty which promoted further not so veiled criticism of the Celtic striker.

Whether he likes it or not Griffiths is the best Scottish striker available with his understudy being paid to play elsewhere by the club that has Teemu Pukki as their first choice striker.

Writing in The Sun about how McLeish had handled the situation Provan warned:

Right now he’s doing himself no favours but his spat with Leigh Griffiths sums up the current international game.

If McLeish was well enough off for players, Griff would be history already. But Eck needs Griffiths more than the Celtic striker needs Scotland — and both know it.

The days when players would walk over broken glass to play for Scotland are over. Set against the club game, international football comes a poor second.

Provan was an international team-mate of McLeish in the eighties. For competition the Celtic winger had John Robertson, Peter Weir and Davie Cooper, McLeish competed with Alan Hansen, Willie Miller, Dave Narey, Paul Hegarty and Alan Evans for a place in defence.
