Rodgers’ frustration at ‘standing still’

Brendan Rodgers believes that Celtic are finally catching up on the momentum that they finished last season with.

Nine goals without reply in two matches against Sevco pushed Graeme Murty over the edge with Motherwell comfortably dismissed in the final of the Scottish Cup.

When Odsonne Edouard was secured on a permanent deal in mid-June it seemed that Celtic were ready to step up a level or two.

The remainder of the transfer window is something of a mystery with Filip Benkovic and Youssouf Mulumbu arriving just before the window closed.

Rodgers cut a frustrated figure as transfer targets were missed and Celtic crashed out of the Champions League to a far from impressive AEK Athens. To compound matters Moussa Dembele was sold to Lyon with no replacement found.

Before the 6-0 win at St Johnstone Rodgers spoke about being unable to move players out in the summer with another aspect touched on following the 4-2 win over Hibs.

Speaking to the BBC he said: “We scored four goals, hit the woodwork four times, had other opportunities where with a bit more finesse on the final pass or [being more] clinical we could have scored more.

“In the summer we wanted to go into another gear and we didn’t. We stood still. And slowly from then, we’ve started to move and we’ve moved forward and forward each week.”

With the Dembele money banked expectations are high for Celtic’s transfer dealings in January.

Leigh Griffiths’ recurring injury problems highlight the lack of striking options while at right-back Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa will both be out of contract in June 2019.
