Simon Donnelly wants to see Leigh Griffiths hit top fitness and form.
Despite not kicking a ball since Celtic’s 6-0 win away to St Johnstone 12 days ago the former Hibs striker has been the most talked about player in the Scottish game.
Against RB Salzburg and St Johnstone Griffiths looked short of his best. His decision to withdraw from the Scotland squad created all sorts of suspicions to put him the focus on his form.
Celtic have huge matches at home and in Europe before Scotland head to Albania with Donnelly hoping that Griffiths is in tip top shape to do himself justice.
“I work at Celtic Park and have seen him in fits and starts,” Donnelly told the Daily Record about the hoops striker. “He needs to be playing regularly because a fully-fit Griffiths is an asset for Celtic and Scotland.
“Whether there are personal problems there I don’t know. I don’t know the ins and outs of Scotland but in football terms, if you can get the ball to a fully-fit Griffiths in the final third he has shown time and again he will put the ball in the back of the net. We don’t have anyone better.”
After facing Hibs tomorrow Celtic play RB Leipzig, Hearts, Dundee, Hearts and RB Leipzig.
Having opted to concentrate on his fitness ahead of playing for Scotland there is little margin for error for Griffiths with his performances under intense scrutiny
So far 2018 has been relatively barren in terms of goals but if he can hit the net over the coming month his career and Celtic’s season will be back on schedule.
