Peter Lawwell has praised the new SPFL telly deal with Sky Sports.

For months supporters were led to believe that a three year contract was out to tender with a number of new broadcasters showing interest.

Two weeks ago The Sun claimed that Sky had blown BT Sport out of the water with a £100m three year deal but on Monday night it emerged that a new five year contract had been signed with Sky.

Across social media the deal was slammed both in terms of value and presentation with Sky’s coverage viewed as dull and lacking commitment compared to the current offering from BT Sport.

Lawwell was involved in negotiating the previous three year contract and believes that the SPFL have pulled off a significant deal.

I believe it is a very good deal for Scottish football,” the Celtic chief told The Sun.

Taking everything into consideration, it is a very good deal.

The positive side is that Sky have recognised the value of Scottish football and significantly increased the money they’re investing in it.

It was the best deal for Scottish football, absolutely.”

The new telly contract will kick in from the start of the 2020/21 season covering 48 SPFL matches rather than the current 60 game deal covering two broadcasters.
