Saltcoats came to a standstill today as hundreds turned out for the unveiling of a statue to it’s most famous son- Bobby Lennox.

A two year campaign to honour the Lisbon Lion came to fruition with Celtic fans from across Ayrshire and beyond joining locals to honour the 75 year old local resident.

Former team-mate and fellow Lisbon Lion John Clark performed the honour on a bright sunny day on the Ayrshire coast.

Throughout his Celtic career Lennox remained in Saltcoats, taking in the daily commute rather than move closer to Celtic Park.

During an incredible playing career he was involved in ELEVEN title winning campaigns adding to the nine-in-a-row run with the 76/77 double winning team and Billy McNeill’s 4-2 side of 79.

Along the way Lennox scored 304 goals for Celtic with only Jimmy McGrory scoring more goals for the hoops.

In total Lennox won 25 major honours as a Celtic player.
