Patrick Roberts was substituted after 57 minutes of Girona’s 0-0 draw with Leganes on Saturday.

The winger is expected to return to Manchester City in January after failing to make his mark at the Spanish side.

Girona are sitting comfortably in mid-table but Roberts is discovering a familiar problem with a loan club preferring to play their own players ahead of someone who won’t be around next season.

So far the 21-year-old has played just 234 minutes for Girona who have an informal tie up with Manchester City and a regular supply of loan players from the Etihad.

Roberts enjoyed two loan spells at Celtic but suffered through two hamstring injuries last season that severely curtailed his involvement.

With his contract running until June 2020 City are likely to be open to a permanent offer for the former Fulham winger rather than arrange another loan or see Roberts run his contract down.
