Eoghan O’Connell marked his return to first team action with a brilliant goal for Bury in their 4-0 win over Stevenage.

The 23-year-old was making his first appearance since the end of September when he curled in the sort of effort that Tom Rogic would have been proud of.

Bury were already leading 3-0 when O’Connell curled his shot in with the win taking Ryan Lowe’s side into eighth place in League Two and into contention for a play-off place.

O’Connell was given his Celtic debut under Neil Lennon but came closest to establishing himself as a first team player in the early days of Brendan Rodgers’ reign.

A defensive injury crisis saw the new hoops manager turn to O’Connell and Efe Ambrose for the Champions League qualifier away to Astana.

The youngster from Cork turned in a man of the match performance, kept his place for the return leg and the 5-2 home win over Hapoel Beer Sheva.

With Kolo Toure drafted in followed by the return from injury of Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simuovic chances were limited with the young defender moving on to Bury in June 2017 after a loan stint at Walsall.
