The Daily Record has raised concerns about Alex McLeish that are bound to concern every club that supplies players to the international squad.

Up until this season Robert Snodgrass has been one of the most fervent and patriotic players in the Scotland set up.

A late developer at club level he became a key player under Gordon Strachan, industrious on the wing and a constant goal threat.

Snodgrass spent last season on loan at Aston Villa but has returned to West Ham where he has enjoyed regular first team football, there hasn’t been a hint of that compromising his desire to play international football.

Surprisingly he wasn’t listed for the November international double header, no real explanation has been offered.

Today Keith Jackson reports in the Daily Record:

Rumours abound that Snodgrass was treated shabbily after joining up with the squad for the last double header against Israel and Portugal.

There’s a suggestion the West Ham man was encouraged to take a painkilling injection in order to declare himself fit for the hammering in Haifa – then left to watch it from a seat in the stand, not even listed among McLeish’s substitutes.

That Snodgrass subsequently withdrew from that squad before asking not to be selected this time adds substance to that theory. It also adds another layer of chaos to a very confused Scotland picture.

At club level painkilling injections are rare and well monitored, at international level they are almost non-existent, Scotland don’t pay Snodgrass’ wages.

In the Daily Mail Kris Commons was critical of Snodgrass for not being available, later he published an apology after clearly being updated with the reasons for the midfielders’ absence.

If an injection was administered it is a very serious matter, every club that supplies players will be concerned.

McLeish has made a number of supportive comments about the SFA medical staff over the last week.

After having the issue aired the onus is now on the SFA to explain what happened with the West Ham asset last month.
