Neil Doncaster believes that responsible gambling is more important than the spate of coin attacks in Scottish football.

In April 2017 a full sized battery was throw at Leigh Griffiths during a game at Ibrox with no action taken. In the same match Scott Sinclair was the victim of racist abuse while a Sevco fan left the Sandy Jardine Stand to confront Scott Brown without passing a steward.

The SPFL, jointly sponsored by Betfred and Ladbrokes took no action.

So far this season the SPFL has taken no action after an assistant referee was cut in the head by a coin thrown by a Sevco fan at Livingston, Hearts haven’t been given any charges after Neil Lennon was struck by a coin at Tynecastle.

Yesterday the SPFL hosted an event to promote responsible gambling.

With the attack on Lennon dominating the headlines followed by the manager making comments about Anti-Irish racism an experienced operator would have touched on those issues before focussing on the main purpose of the media event.

The Evening Times reports Doncaster saying: “There is a time and a place for a proper discussion on this sort of issue, but I’m extremely conscious that I don’t want to overshadow this very important issue.

I’m very happy to talk at further length in due course about what change would look like and how we might improve the situation, particularly as there are objects being thrown. I’m very happy to have the conversation at another time.

It’s extremely disappointing that a number of incidents like that have happened in recent times. Clearly throwing any object, especially coins, has the potential to do real harm.”
