Celtic have an option to extend Mikael Lustig’s contract by 12 months.

The defender’s current deal runs out in June 2019 but the club can extend that until June 2020 without any consultation with the Swedish international.

Celtic have used this type of clause in a number of contracts and activated it with Emilio Izaguirre during the 2016/17 season.

That allowed the club to pick up a fee when the Honduran moved to Al Feiha, ironically Izaguirre returned to Celtic a year after quitting for the Saudi side.

Explaining his own situation Lustig told the Daily Record: “We will see what happens. It’s in my contract and it’s up to Celtic so we’ll see in a couple of weeks. Celtic have an option to take up.

We’ve done it before but they are always trying to improve the team. That’s normal.

I don’t know what will happen but I am all about the team. As long as Celtic do good, I am happy.”

Right-back is a position that Brendan Rodgers is likely to address in January when the transfer window opens.

Cristian Gamboa is also out of contract at the end of the season while Anthony Ralston hasn’t made a single top team appearance this season.
