Why Roberts won’t be joining Celtic

Connor Roberts is highly unlikely to become a Celtic player next summer.

Having just turned 23, being a regular in the Swansea team and breaking into Ryan Giggs’ international side he has all the cards with his contract expiring next summer.

Stirring up interest and speculation is often part of an agents job, with Celtic it rarely works out.

Roberts and his representatives are in the position to really cash in next summer. As a free agent, over the age of 23, they are free to negotiate terms with whoever they wish without reference to Swansea or a transfer fee.

Mention of Celtic and some vague connection with Brendan Rodgers won’t do negotiations any harm.

Celtic clearly require improvements at right-back, Mikael Lustig may be good back-up next season but the current term looks to be one too many with his performances in European matches a real weakness.

Under successive managers Celtic have kept their transfer business low key, until a deal is struck there is very rarely any word. There is certainly no public negotiations.

With a dearth of club stories during the international break the Roberts story doesn’t do anyone any harm but the days of Celtic signing players from clubs in the EPL and EFL look virtually over.
