Bobby Charlton has paid his respects to Bobby Lennox on the day that he was honoured by his home town of Saltcoats.

Many of the greats of Scottish football over the last 50 years were in Ayrshire today with Charlton sending a special message in honour of the Lisbon Lion.

Manchester United followed Celtic by winning the European Cup in 1968 with a special friendly rivalry between the two managers, Matt Busby and Jock Stein.

The two men started life in Lanarkshire mining communities less than 10 miles apart before stamping their personality on two of the iconic clubs in world football.

Charlton spent 17 years as a player at Manchester United, surviving the Munich tragedy and was rewarded with a testimonial match against Celtic.

Whenever he discussed opposing players Lennox was mentioned as someone he would like to have played alongside, in 1974 Charlton got that wish when he played for Celtic at Anfield in the testimonial match for Ron Yeats with the hoops winning 4-1.
