Derek Johnstone has delivered the first internal warning to Steven Gerrard that results must improve- or else.

The Ibrox ambassador has been an unashamed cheerleader for every regime at Ibrox from Dave Murray to Dave King including Craig Whyte, Charles Green and whoever else is in control of the blue room of dignity.

Johnstone fully subscribed, and more, to the pre-season hype as the gullibles bought up season tickets and growled about stopping 10-in-a-row.

Draws with Spartak Moscow and Kilmarnock either side of a Hampden humiliation from Aberdeen has provided an unwelcome reminder of reality to the Ibrox support.

After glowing praise for Mr King over running up another £14.3m of losses DJ sent out a not so subtle warning to Gerrard in his Evening Times column.

The board and their backers have come in again this summer and supported Steven Gerrard and there is no doubt that the players we brought in ahead of the new season are better than the ones that came in the previous year or the ones that left.

Rangers now have the best squad that they have had in the last six or seven years and hopefully they see a better return for the outlay in the next few months.

Gerrard has blamed the lack of quality in his signings for the disappointing results against Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.

The Ibrox wage bill has soared to cope with the former Liverpool u-18 coach, his backroom staff and signings.

If any more ground is lost to Celtic in the league table DJ is likely to be praising Mr King for taking decisive action and appointing a RRM who properly understands the company as Gerrard rebuilds his media career back home in Liverpool with his wife and family.
