Kevin Clancy cost Celtic two points and top spot in the SPFL.

Already leading 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Ryan Christie, Filip Benkovic drilled a low shot into the net from a corner of the right.

Motherwell defender Tom Alfred was all over the Celtic defender but with a smile on his face Clancy disallowed the ‘goal’.

The last time Celtic dropped points Clancy was also the referee, ignoring an attempted head-butt from Livingston’s Dolly Menga on Christie that later earned the striker a two match retrospective ban.

That was one of a number of horror decisions from the match referee, late in the second half David Turnbull chopped down Callum McGregor but despite being booked during the first half he remained on the pitch.

Motherwell drew level in the 88th minute through Danny Johnston to deny Celtic two points and top spot.

While Celtic were wasteful and missed a penalty every team is entitled to a fair interpretation of the rules.

Having missed Menga’s attack on Christie and wrongly disallowed Benkovic’s goal hopefully Clancy can spend a long time in the lower divisions eradicating honest mistakes.

Tonight’s fixture was the third time that Clancy has refereed a Celtic game in two months.
