Homesick Johnny Russell has opened the door for a move to Celtic.

The striker, originally from Coatbridge, moved to MLS outfit Kansas City in January making a big impression on and off the park.

Russell’s form has earned him a recall into the Scotland international side but with his family still based in the Derby area he hasn’t ruled out a return to the UK.

The 28-year-old spent four and a half years with Derby after leaving Dundee United and was spotted at last week’s Celtic v RB Salzburg Europa League match.

I’m enjoying it, it’s been good for me,” Derbyshire Live reports Russell telling RamsTV when asked how he’s finding life in the MLS.

I do miss it here, but it’s a decision that I felt that had to make at the time. It’s worked out for me, but I do miss it here and I miss the boys here as well.”

PLZ Soccer added: “Not having family over as frequent as normal, especially having a little girl as well, so it’s been tough.

I’m a bit homesick at times, but it’s been a great experience, something I’ve had to adapt to and I feel I’ve done that well.”

With Brendan Rodgers going on record to state that he was looking to sign two strikers in January Russell is likely to be under consideration.

Although he has rarely played as an out and out striker the system that Celtic play would seem suited to his game.

With his know how of the Scottish game and familiarity with the Celtic players in the international squad Russell would be able to seamlessly slot into Rodgers’ squad.
