Brendan Rodgers is hoping to convince Ewan Henderson that Celtic is the best club to develop his talent.

The midfielder has rejected offers of a new contract due to frustrations about the pathway to first team football with his current deal expiring in June 2019.

Henderson has been called into first team training by Rodgers who gave him his first team debut as a substitute against Kilmarnock towards the end of last season.

Finding the ideal route to develop the 18-year-old into a first team player is the task that is exercising the hoops boss rather than monetary issues.

At the same age Liam Henderson was struggling to get the regular first team action he required with mixed results from his loan spells at Rosenborg and Hibs.

Wary of going down that same route Ewan has resisted the easy option of signing a new Celtic contract.

With just 17 games in the new look Reserve League it is difficult for home-grown players to force their way into the first team with players going out on loan to Forfar, Stranraer, Raith Rovers and Dumbarton this season.

Calvin Miller at Dundee and Ross Doohan with Ayr United are getting the type of experience needed to develop their careers but it seems that the loan system is a case of hit or miss.

Last January Liam Henderson left for Bari before moving on to Verona in the summer.
